On this What I Love Wednesday, I want to talk about bicycles. This is the perfect time of year to enjoy the Southern California sunshine, and what better way to have a little summer fun than from the seat of a bicycle? There is a great ride on the Marvin Braude Bike Trail, sometimes known as The Strand. This paved bicycle path runs along the shoreline from the Pacific Palisades all the way to Torrance and is 22 miles long.
The Route
Although you can start anywhere along the path and bike to any stopping point, if you plan to go from start to finish, you can begin at Will Rogers State Beach in the Pacific Palisades area. From there, you will head south through Santa Monica State Beach where you will get to ride under the famed Santa Monica Pier.
After passing through Santa Monica, the path winds its way through Venice Beach. From here, the path changes as cyclists go along Washington Blvd and around Marina Del Rey. Once in Marina Del Rey, the path is a bicycle path once again and runs along the main channel of the marina.
From the marina, the path continues south to Dockweiler State Beach, El Porto Beach, and Manhattan County Beach, and then moves to Hermosa Beach. At this point, you can choose to stay along the beach, which can be busy with foot traffic, or ride along a bicycle lane on Hermosa Avenue.
Eventually, you’ll land in Redondo County Beach and go through the parking structure of the pier. For a short time, you’ll need to walk your bike through the King Harbor Marina. Once you mount up again, you’ll end your ride at Torrance County Beach at the base of the Palos Verdes Peninsula hills.
Some people want a shorter route and only take the Santa Monica portion of the path. This shorter route is 8.5 miles long and runs from Temescal Canyon to Washington Blvd in Venice.
No Bike? No Problem.
Even if you don’t own a bicycle, you can still enjoy this wonderful trip. There are many bicycle rental stores all along the path. Most charge just $15 a day. Simply find someone where you wish to start.
I love living on the Westside and hope you enjoy learning about the many different things you can enjoy here. If you want to live on the Westside, too, give me a call. I’d be happy to help you find the house of your dreams.
